Haha, your dept. is awesome...free yoga classes for members?! What other perks do ya'll get? (Also...how many women do you have in your dept.? Just curious...I just think a room full of manly-men stereotypical FF's doing yoga is a funny mental image...)

    Nurses vs EMT/Paramedics in EMS

I thought Pharmacology/A&P were required for paramedic...I know the paramedic degree program I've briefly looked into at the local community college requires it. And a bunch of other "hard" (as opposed to social) science courses for graduation. and an Associates takes 2 years to get. Right?

    Blood Glucose Checks

That seems backwards...shouldn't you check the reading before calling ALS? What's the normal response time in your area for ALS backup? Is it really long or something?

    Nurses vs EMT/Paramedics in EMS

12 weeks? I know you can get your EMT-BASIC in <6 months. EMT-I takes longer than that... but full-on paramedic w/ all of the associated certs take around two years from what I've heard. Am I just wrong here?

I was taught to just say that I was with my VFD. Although, I'm not technically a ride-along with my VFD. I'm just an uncertified member. But to avoid further argument, just ask your Lead how you should introduce yourself, or if they feel you should even be talking to the PT.

    AED On Hockey Player

Agreed. Move him off the ice, definitely move him if there isn't suspected spinal injury, the ice is enough of a safety hazard without adding electricity to the mix.

    Nurses vs EMT/Paramedics in EMS

Why do you say that? Is it because BLS is ridiculously undertrained? And what's wrong with paramedics in the USA? (I'm slated to take my EMTB test this coming June)

    Blood Glucose Checks

I'm just a student doing ride-alongs and I've taken it on 3 different patients... gloves, open bandaid/2x2/alcohol set aside, swab finger, gauze away alcohol (messes with the reading), poke with a safety needle, bleed, test, bandaid, dispose of all wrappings in a glove. How hard is that? :P I...

To the newbie: Go ahead and jump in when you feel comfortable. Do what everyone on the ambulance does...LISTEN TO THE LEAD EMT. Go ahead and jump in and say "Do you want me to help take vitals?" If you see that they could use the help. Offer to carry bags. (O2 bags or the "Aid Bag") WHEN you...
