    Help!

The heart is killing me! I'm a medic student and we just hit Cardiac. I'm a bit overwhelmed. This is unlike anything I've ever had to learn before. I know the physiology of conduction pretty well, and when I look at a normal strip I can see what is what, but any alteration throws me off. More...

    Pupils

Maybe I'm just having a brain fart, but help me out here with this. On our run forms, for pupils, we have a (R) & (L) box for: constricted, midrange, dilated, unresponsive, and pearl. Now...say you do your pupil assesment via penlight and lets say, one or both pupils dont react to light and they...

    Blood pressures

So let me get this straight, thigh cuffs go over thigh and the stethoscope goes to the popiteal artery? Then for a forearm reading, take a normal sized bp cuff over the forearm and stethoscope goes to the radial artery?

    Math for ALS

BLS here with a question in regard to the math expectancies of a paramedic. I want to go to a paramedic program as prepared as possible to make the studies run a hair smoother so I'm thinking of taking a few math courses to help me prepare. I hear that paramedics use math for medicine...

    New CPR Guidelines...do they work?

When I took my CPR class it was 15-2 for adults, 5-1 for children and infants, and 3-1 for newborns. What was it changed to? I start my job training in a week, I'm sure they'll tell us then. But can anyone give me the heads up? Also, since we're on this topic. My class emt book (brady) said...

    Airway protection for allergic reaction

Book doesn't mention if you should use an oro or naso to help keep the airway open during an allergic reaction. I wouldn't use an oro incase the throat over inflames. Is naso the safest bet here?

    Dislocated Shoulder

For us Basics, what is the correct way to handle someone with a dislocated shoulder? I believe the book mentions to put into a sling and don't attempt to pop back into place. But I've talked to many people who have dislocated their shoulder and they say it extremely painful. Without us not being...

    Getting your license

How long did it take everyone to get your license? I'm not talking about your registration with the NREMT, I mean the license from your state. I had no delays with the National Registry as far as paper work and grading goes, so I should have gotten my license from Illinois Department of Public...

Question with regard to hypoxic drive.

We used Brady's book for class too. And it totally drove me nuts. The book contradicts itself numerous times...it had my head spinning quite often. And a lot of times you'll find answers that dont match between the text book and the workbook, even the cd rom too. As far as your question goes...

    Pulse readings on infants

now that I think about it I believe the second option for infants is femoral, not carotid... does that sound better? still hard to palpate through all that leg fat.

    Seizure call

I wonder then, would it be your best bet to use a naso airway for an unknown unresponsive patient? Or is naso only used if the oral causes a gag reflex..

    Seizure call

speaking of seizures... I was wondering lets say you respond to a call to a "man down in the park" You know nothing, no one saw anything, and no one knows him. Only thing you know is he is unresponsive so you slip in an oral airway. Then on the way to the ambulance he starts seizing again...

    Pulse readings on infants

Okay, I still haven't worked a day in the field yet, but every now and then whenever I encounter an infant I'll try and see if I can get a pulse by palpation and I find it extremely difficult. And I palpate the areas the book says, carotid and brachial artery. Between all the loose baby fat and...

    1st Ride along

wow...you get to do ride alongs? I wish my class let us do that. The best we got was 10 hours in the ER. Since youre still a student and arent licensed yet I wouldnt think you would be required to do anything, cause if you do and you make a mistake, somehow they find out you werent licensed and...

    The 24 hour schedule

For anyone that works the 24 on - 48/72 off schedule, I'm curious, do they let you sleep at all? Even if its just a cat nap. I just find it hard to believe that someone could expect you to stay up for 24 hours and operate an ambulance, along with medical/traumatic emergencies.

    Scenario time.

Do her symptoms really call for oral glucose? She is diabetic, but she also popped a good amount of pills and mixed it with alcohol. I dont see how that can be grounds to administer oral glucose, seemingly her vitals are well within normal range.

    Broken glass in eyes?

Yeah I didn't mean a huge penetrating piece, I was thinking more along the lines of sandlike. I figured flushing it with water would be the best way, but I wasn't certain. I know glass can scratch the eye...seems tricky. So are we all on agreeance then? Flush with water, brush away any other...

    Broken glass in eyes?

Hey guys. New to the forum here. Just had a quick question. It ran cross my mind that this was never touched during class and I'm almost certain it happens out there. Broken glass in the eyes. From lets say a shattered windshield or a broken beer bottle during a fight. How would this be...
