Sitting in yet another BLS CPR Class (my 10th recert to date, I believe). I know full well the science behind the nearly-annual changes in the guidelines, but damn, I hate erasing my memory banks; "forget what you knew... do it this way", and then in 2 years: "Forget what we said was the 'right...

    Service Dog in Ambulance

Quick Question. Just heard this one. Call was for a female who wanted transport to the ED for "really bad poison oak", and asked the dispatcher if it was possible for her "blind seeing eye dog" (a service dog protected by law) to accompany her to the ED in the Ambulance. Upon dispatch the...

I am possibly taking some psychology classes next semester and will be looking for a term paper topic, so could you tell me: What are we overcompensating for?

I am not ashamed to say it... I just yelled at the radio... When dispatching units to a vehicle accident, there is no need to end the dispatch with the words, "There are children involved." Who cares!?!? Is that supposed to make you respond faster? Abandon proper code 3 driving techniques...

Passes all open. Forest Service and Park Service opened a large number of high altitude roads. Campgrounds open. Snow down to 5500 feet on Memorial Day Weekend. Could be interesting...

Annual issue: Dogs left in Cars

Last I checked, only 14 states have laws on the books regarding the leaving of pets in vehicles, some referring to the act as cruelty to animals and listing the act alongside "torment, torture, maim, hang, poison, unnecessarily or cruelly beat, or needlessly mutilate a living animal or creature"...

Exact opposite for me. Love writing them and need a down-to-the-wire deadline. That last minute stress somehow creates better papers for me.

Instuctors, how do you deal with this?

Beyond what happens in the class, what, if any, obligation would or should the instructor have to act on the information? Had you encountered this on the job, you might have notified LE... what about in this setting? On a personal note, I have several deeply ingrained convictions and morals...

Armed EMS. How many of you carry?

LOCALLY... Ambulance = Never seen it. The company I worked for once-upon-a-time had a strict policy against it. Fire = I know of several Firefighters (not prevention officers) who carry as appropriate. SAR = As long as it is done legally, the unofficial policy has always been "don't...

My Annual Question: What summer job have you secured?

Taking on as many units of school as possible for the summer (3 over the allowed) in order to slam through school as fast as possible. Have a couple GIS internships and part-time gigs that I am looking at. Working Event Medical as able at High School Football Games, In-and-Out Company...

    Don't let it lapse

I know plenty of people in CA that take the NREMT then get their State Cert and let the NREMT expire. These are smart people. If you have no reasonable intention of leaving the state or applying with one of a few Idiot Employers that require two identical certifications, only one of which...
