Is anyone afraid that Evidence-Based Medicine will kill EMS?

I agree. As a rural volunteer IO know all too the well the value of ALS and BLS. We don't need to revert, but we do need more education. Alos, I agree we should treat the pt., not the machines, the textbooks, or the protocols.

    Blizzard

Yes, I have seen it happen before. In NM, CO, and even certain parts of VA I have seen it. What do you do? You improvise. In NM we mutual aided the CO volunteers, and due to the pt being pretty bad off and no ambulance any where near us, and the Helo being unavailable, we threw her on the LSB...

    Taking extra patients??

I have never heard of this being the preferred method of transport. I have done it in a pinch, but I have never seen it recommended outside of being absolutely necessary. As too being sued, well this a little out of my scope as I know little of the laws of your location. I can not see it being...

    New Tampa FL EMT Here;

The last I heard, NOFD is still looking for Basics, Medics, and those interested in the Fire Service. You will need to pass some entrance exams, but they are worth looking into if you are interested in New Orleans. I understand they will sponsor you the fire academy. PS. Nice to meet you.

What is it a paramedic does?

Veneficus, you are someone I highly respect and admire. I have learned greatly from you in my time here on this site, and although we do not always agree, we can disagree in a respectful and professional manner. This is one of those times I simply cannot agree with you, but why remains a...

    Discouraged..

I became a safety supervisior on accident. I have been in the oilfield for several years, and so I always volunteered. I went to work for a company hauling salt water, adn they needed a safety man. It fell into my lap. I continue to volunteer, even though I am currently laid off, but the...

    Discouraged..

Do ER's there use EMT's? Have you considered industrial medicine; safety training, response, and supervision in your area? EMT are used in a variety of ways. I know this is not what you are searching for, but perhaps it is an option. Oil companies and all kinds of plants and manufacturing...

Is anyone afraid that Evidence-Based Medicine will kill EMS?

This is absolutely true. Level of education is important, and the relevance to the field being studied is also important. there are, however, other aspects to be considered as well. Just becasue someone is educated doesn't mean they are qualified of creditable. A pharmaceutical company conducted...

Is anyone afraid that Evidence-Based Medicine will kill EMS?

I believe the post in question is on point if you read it in the proper context. He is saying there would not be as many ALS transports to analyze if we had the education to treat and release on scene. He is referring to those who do not need transport to a trauma or advanced facility, but...

Lights on the flight line at airports.

I have always been taught to run lights on an airstrip, night or day, and regardless of weather condition. I did not know it was mandated by the FAA, but then again I thought it was just common sense as well. We have always been escorted by an airport offficial, and they toohave some kind of...

What is it a paramedic does?

I agree, totally. The modern EMT-P needs to diversify like the nurses did, and in reality this is will be the only way we survive as a viable and respected profession. We need to fight for more education, a higher standard of care, and and a far more diversified scope of practice. It is...

Is anyone afraid that Evidence-Based Medicine will kill EMS?

This is very true. I worked for such an agency in NM, and we had a ground transport time of almost 2 hours, and this was on a good day. They think a blanket solution is a cure all, when in reality different populations in different areas require a different approach. I live 2 miles form both of...

    Hypertensive Emergencies

I agree with this post. It really would depend upon a few other factors. Is it chronic and known? or new onset and previously unknown? Is this a relative hypertension? Did he/ she just get finished an exhaustive exercise routine, or have they been relaxed for a while? Is there a known cause for...
