Seeking Input of Fellow EMS'ers... New Funny EMS T-Shirt Biz...

No longer in Business This was my second home business... ended up being too labor intensive, sales were too low... and between my Paramedic job and my Other home business (which takes much less of my time and gives much higher profits/income)... the T-shirt business had to go. Sorry...

    Girl Overdoses on Expresso Coffee

Actually it's easy... involves a quick blood test via finger stick, just like a CBG. Only takes a few seconds and can even be done via the drive up window! :P If your CBC (Capillary Blood Caffiene) Level is too high, No Expresso For You! :D

    Medic to RN program

I think there are too many medics that look for a quick way to get an RN degree who are simply looking at the $$$. If you "really" want to become an RN... that is fine. However, I have spoken to former medics, who are now RNs, that really miss the autonomy of being a medic, having total...

    Versed For Sz

We switched from Valium to Versed about 3-4 years ago... and upped our dosage of Versed about 2 years ago. We titrate up to 0.3mg/kg for adults and kids... and up to 0.2mg/kg for over 55yrs, COPD, Renal failure, etc... And no... that's not a typo... we can give a 100kg person up to 30mg...

Why is this taking so long?

If it has been ONLY 2 weeks since you handed them an application... it's not time to start worrying yet. In my experience... volunteer agencies do things one of three ways. 1. Take new people, as they apply... having them show up at the next "drill night", etc... and start training right...

    Steel toe or no??

I have always worn steel-toed boots. When I started EMS, I bought a pair of really expensive boots... they lasted a long time, but I found out that I am the type that trashes the TOP of my boots. So... having boots that could have the sole replaced was not that important. Now I buy the...

3 days into medic school and we've already got a drop out

Those numbers are CRAZY... My paramedic program started with 28... and we maybe lost 3 over the course of the entire program. Programs need to be focused on providing a quality education to qualified students. Students need to know what the process entails... what preparation is...

Paramedic Tuition Assistance... What does your Employer offer?

Living in Oregon, we have an AA Degree requirement for Paramedics. The company I work for believes in "growing our own" Paramedics. Therefore, as an EMT-B with our company, you can receive: 1) Interest-free loan for up to 1/2 of the cost of your Paramedic Program Pre-Requisites. 2)...

    I love college town EMS

No College in my town... Most of the "too drunk" customers we get are "Urban Campers"... (i.e. Homeless).

Cardizem: Who has it and in what form???

We switched to Diltiazem HCL 25mg/5 ml vials. Because these are supposed to be refridgerated to maintain shelf life... we only keep them on the rig for 30 days before tossing them out and replacing them. However, cost wise... it's cheaper than what the syringes we were using before cost.

    personal bags

Wow... I started out in EMS with a much smaller personal "kit"... and after 17 years... I've yet to use it for more than a small laceration here and there. Guess I have just been lucky (or unlucky)... depending upon how you look at it. Heck... even my family members have witnessed more...

Ambulance Driver = EMT = Medic

As a paramedic for the past 16 years... there is no "skin off my nose" if everyone in EMS was referred to (by the general public) as "medics". Sure beats "ambulance driver". (When nurses call me this, I point out that they are not "bed pan attendants"... althoug that is part of their job...

Took the National Registry today! Test shut off after 102 questions

You really can't judge how you did based on the number of questions you were given. Yes... if you do very well... you can get a shorter test. Yes... you can also "fail fast". The questions will change as you answer correctly and/or miss questions in different categories.

    Paramedic School

Congradulations! So when do you get your books? It's never too early to start studying. When I was an EMT, my Paramedic partners would make fun of me because I was always reading a Paramedic text book... (long before I ever signed up for school). However, it made school much easier for...

What made you get into EMS?

The occupational handbook (that I was browsing through) at the library kept opening to the page on EMS. Yes... pretty sad to think I was in the library, reading through a government produced book, shopping for a career. I called the numbers listed for both JEMS and EMS magazine...

    Looking for potential calls...

No... you wouldn't "call 911" first and wait till you are dispatched. In those cases, someone, other than yourself, was "contacting 911"... i.e. YOU. You would get on the radio and notify dispatch of your situation. Walk in medicals... coming upon an accident scene... etc... These are all...
