What is the greatest training disservice?

While an instructor has guidelines and objectives to meet, I feel all instructors should teach their students to Think! Give them sccenarios that make them think! It is not an attempt to confuse them, just an effort to prepare them as closely as possible for the real world. trust me, the...

    Treatment for Opiate Overdose

One of my former partners was one pf those "Cowboys". I got slammed around the back of the truck til we were able to restrain him. Our protocols state 0.4 - 2.0 mg titrate to effect. Keep 'em breathing, but don't wake 'em up!

    What do I do now?

Check into local volunteer departments. While you won't get your hands dirty right away, you will begin to get an idea of how to assess situations, and how to safely approach scenes.

    Self protection question

I too must agree with Bossy on this. Also, our sate prohibits "weapons" on ambulances unless you are an LEO, AND on duty as such. Besides, there are many items on board that an be used. I work in a rural county, but that doesn't mean we don't see our share of violence. I have been...

Work Experience as Intermediate Before Paramedic?

There is a saying that goes "Paramedics save lives, EMTs save Paramedics, and Instructors will take all the credit". Remember, none of the ALS skills will work if you don't remember the basics first and foremost! Without the field experience to hone your basic skills, and your confidence...

    EMTs with long hair

Our service does not have a policy regarding hair length, but you must be neat. As for facial hair, you must be able to be fit tested for the respirators. Several of our guys have mustaches and goatees, but they are kept neatly trimmed.

I would like to add my Congrats as well and wish you the best! As an instructor I can tell you that your instructors WILL be very tough on you! Who knows, you may be the medic that treats me! I know my students say that as I get older, I'm not as nice as I used to be!:excl: But, after 25...

    More questions for medman

Our crews work 24/48. There are bunk rooms and showers. Uniforms are sent to a cleaning service, so everyone has extra uniforms at base. We also have a washer & dryer at base for those "messy" shifts where you encounter excessive fluid loss from your patients, or even muddy calls or those...

Chest presses, not breaths, better CPR?

I have to agree with MMIZ. Having bystanders act is better than nothing being done. I don't think there is a "perfect" solution, but as an instructor, I hear the same concerns about mouth to mouth. The public does not usally carry barrier devices with them, so they need to know that just...
