8 Vital Capacity Breaths is Better for Pre-Oxygenation Than 3 Minutes of Tidal Volume Breathing

I definitely misread the methods regarding a 3L reservoir bag. Does this mean there wasn't any outside air entrained into the system? If so then I wonder what would explain this. Greater alveolar recruitment? I wonder how CPAP would compare. And no, I do not think the authors are lying. I had...

8 Vital Capacity Breaths is Better for Pre-Oxygenation Than 3 Minutes of Tidal Volume Breathing

TVB was only at 5lpm. I think every breath would draw in ambient air so you would never have the opportunity to really denitrogenate the lungs... I still believe 3 mins on a non rebreather would be at least equal to the vital capacity breaths. I think denitrogenate is a word?!?!...

"When I get a little money I buy books...

Pharmacology for nursing care is a really good book ( don't discredit it because it's nursing). Also just buy the old edition (7th). The information shouldn't have changed that much. It has the perfect amount of depth and concentrates more on drug classes than the individual drugs (but does...

NYC Hazmat Awareness & WMD Certs

"You gonna get a Level A HazMat suit to carry around in your personal car, in case you get flagged down on patrol? You're AMR vest ain't gonna cut it." It for awareness: recognize a danger and how to stay safe far enough away...

I suck at driving the ambulance. (I'm a medic, not an ambulance driver! ;-)

By large/ truck style mirrors for your car and get used to using them everyday. Back into parking spaces whenever you go out. Also, these incidents are when driving routine correct? I didn't know if you meant "take it out to some back roads" as in you gotta learn to drift the rig. Your code 3...

    Flight Paramedic, Ask Me Anything

I'm not very familiar with the CCP-f of cfcp or whatever it is (I'm not american). Can you get a little more into the education across the board in the USA for this (or is it state dependent). How long is it? Clinical time? Do you think it's adequate? The future?

    Must-read texts

Right out of school I would suggest lily's patho of heart disease and west's pulmonary phys and patho (we are a targeted system and resp/cardiac are the majority of our calls) I recommend garcia for your next ECG book (the art of interpretation) and a good airway book (our service pushes Kovacs...

Strategies for Dealing with Nuisance Calls/Frequent Fliers

Mental health is obviously a factor here. Whether it's just loneliness/depression or an inability to understand and cope with life (TBI, low IQ etc.) try to remain compassionate for that reason. That being said, our last issue was dealt with through the ED and his parents were contacted to...

can a person with only partial use of his non dominant hand still be a EMT

Perhaps our best nurse has hands that I believe are a result of thalidomide. One hand basically has fingers the size of toes and the other has less. He functions very well in the ER, including starting IV's etc. But I agree, lifting would be my biggest concern. Although 80% for some is still far...

    High-Flow Nasal Cannula, Non-intubated

People just need to be aware of the differences between oxygenation and ventilation. Same as with a patient that has seen improved sats with CPAP but they are still hypoventilating. This is my biggest fear as we roll CPAP out to bls. And yes, I am familiar with permissive hypercapnea.

Recommendations for a book on aviation?

Thanks, I'll check out those above resources. Ya, I know that flight physiology and emerg procedures will be covered (and I have already had some of that training to work on the plane and helo on overtime). I was just asking because we end up hanging around in airports a lot and I like to be...

Recommendations for a book on aviation?

Thanks for the reply. I'm not worried about the medicine (there is definitely lots of that ahead). I just get curious when I hear people talking about the ceiling/clouds, V1, and all those types of things.

Recommendations for a book on aviation?

Hi, I will be entering the critical care field soon (well I have 2 years of training to worry about getting through first). When I do fly with the CCPs, I always find their knowledge of aviation really interesting. I know that they have gathered this through 30 years of flying and chatting with...

    Video Laryngoscopy

King vision, used it twice today. Once to practice with the tool (still newer to us) and the other was a tube I don't thinkno would get with DL (small mouth opening, Obese and poor neck mobility.) The hardest part is getting the blade into the mouth. Even works well with soiled airways and less...
